First Impression of a Backstreet Boy: @AJ_McLean

Author’s Note: I have warm, fuzzy feelings when I think about each Backstreet Boy. This will be part of an ongoing series which covers first impressions of the boys.

Good old Alex. Yeah, I really cannot refer to him as AJ but for the purpose of this article I’ll try. I know for a fact that he’ll answer to both. He’s always been so different than the other boys. I’ve always loved the mysterious, bad boy, rocker type. From the piercings to the constant hair changes, AJ has had quite the evolution.

My first impression of Alex, ermmmm I mean AJ; starts once again with the good old red album and that fateful day in the car. Who was this guy with the sunglasses? Why does he think he’s better than everyone else? Even by just looking over his sunglasses, he exuded a suave, kind of sexy. 7 year old me knew he was trouble just by looking at him.

I wasn’t completely wrong about him either. Like Nick, AJ has had quite a tumultuous life. I didn’t struggle as much with his life choices because that’s what a bad boy does and you kind of expect it of him. As a kid growing up, I never really viewed him as a role model either.  All I know is that it’s similar to a girl who’s in the love with a guy who treats her badly. She just keeps coming back for more. Maybe it’s those big chocolate brown eyes? I swear my heart beats a little faster when I see AJ and he can pretty much do no wrong.

Meeting AJ was probably my favourite thing ever. He loves to compliment everyone and being told you look hot will always make me melt. I don’t care if he was lying or not, my ass soaked it all up for what it was worth! During our first meeting he looked me up and down, said “Wow” and that was enough for me. His hugs are awesome too. Every time I see AJ, it’s like getting together with an old friend. I think if time permitted, he could spend his whole afternoon talking to you about literally anything.

I have major regret and should have asked for some popcorn.

I’m kind of sad to say that I’ve probably had the least interaction with him over the years. I did get to chat with him quite extensively in Vegas, but somehow the pictures of that night are nowhere to be found. I know that we took a really great selfie together.

During my last interaction with the boys, AJ randomly asked me how my dog was. I was so confused at first and then he said, “Didn’t he hump Brian?” How in the hell did he remember something that had happened four months prior? I mean I doubt Brian is getting assaulted on the sidewalk on a regular basis. Only my dog is capable of doing something like that. Granted, he was a 5-month-old puppy when it happened and Brian thought it was hilarious.

I love that AJ remembered that story because it was completely random and he wasn’t even involved.  It proves that he’s a great listener and really cares about the fans. So if you’re ever shy around the boys and you can pick who to talk to first, don’t go with your fave. Talk to Alex first.

Damn boy!
