Opinion: Comparing @backstreetboys To Newer “Boy Bands”

The other day I read an article  giving “8 Reasons One Direction is a Better Boy Band Than the Backstreet Boys”.  It was a pretty fun read and I enjoyed it…though not cool to “roll eyes” at A.J…ha!

(You can check it out here: 8 Reasons One Direction is a Better Boy Band Than the Backstreet Boys

I have also read many other pieces that have compared more seasoned groups (i.e. Backstreet Boys and New Kids On The Block) with more recent incarnations.

It seems like there is a constant need for people to compare “then and now” and to justify why their group is the best!

I think it is cool how passionate “younger fans” are about the boy bands of their time!   I also love how ” older fans” have remained loyal supporters and still fight for their “boys”.  I think we can all relate to one or both of these feelings!

I am a 36 year old woman who started as a NKOTB fan back in the day.  I then fell off the “boy band” wagon and went through a very long “oldies” and  “classic rock” phase.  And recently I fell in love with BSB.  I really can’t consider myself a “die hard” fan to the degree many others are and I think that gives me a little objectivity.

That being said, to compare a band that has been together for over two decades, has sold over 130 million records worldwide, thrived before there was social media, and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame with a group whose first album came out in 2011 is not fair…to either group.

And I caution folks who are talking about hair or fashion styles…twenty years from now you too will be saying “what were they thinking?!”

Continued best wishes to ALL artists who have worked hard enough to be successful enough that we are even discussing this!

That is just my quick two cents on the subject…I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Hugs and Planks!

Jen
