On October 23, 2001, the Backstreet Boys released their greatest hits compilation, known as “The Hits: Chapter One.”
The album only had one original song on it, the power-ballad “Drowning,” and included many of their other hits, including “I Want It That Way,” “The Call,” “More Than That,” “As Long As You Love Me” and “Larger Than Life,” just to name a few.
According to the boys in various interviews since the release, they were hesitant on releasing a greatest hits, but their former label, Jive, wanted them to release the album by the holidays, mostly due to the fact that they had not released an album in 2001.
The album ended up being the 13th best-selling album of 2001, selling 5 million copies from October 23 to December 31, 2001.
Along with the album, a video compilation of their music videos was also released with the same name and cover.
